Internet of Things Connects Billions of Devices 20/12/2013

You may not be ready for the Internet of Things, but the Internet of Things is ready for you. Did you know that the 9 billion devices connected to the Internet today will rise to nearly 50 billion over the next few years? Many of these are smartphones and tablets, but IoT increasingly encompasses digital utility meters, appliances and even cars. Machine-to-machine (M2M) intelligence emerges as such devices send data back to the enterprise, where it’s analyzed to surface information of business value.

Deutsche Telekom is already taking one such solution to market. In 5,000 farms throughout Europe, sensors monitor the body temperature of cows, so that veterinarians don’t have to expend time and gas driving from farm to farm to check on them to determine when pregnant cows are due to give birth. Instead, the M2M network automatically sends the vets text messages when a calf is coming. That’s one small example, but as Oracle chief communications officer Bob Evans noted in The Internet of Things: Will M2M Transform Your Company or Kill It?, the M2M future is rushing toward us much faster than most of us can anticipate. How to deal? Among the items Bob suggests companies study : How to tap into the limitless sensor data unleashed by IoT/M2M; how 50 billion interconnected devices will change distribution channels; how to make products and services more intelligent; and how to maintain competitive advantage in such a turbulent environment.

Cisco Security Solution is Helping Protecting Online Retailer Schneider's Data Traffic 20/08/2012

Online retail group Schneider is protecting its email and Web traffic with Cisco IronPort Hosted Email Security and Cisco ScanSafe Web Security cloud-based services. These two solutions provide the retailer with a comprehensive package of email security, spam protection and Web security. Mobile user devices, too, are integrated into the services through Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client. For Schneider, the benefits are a higher level of security and a significant reduction in the effort involved in security management.

The solutions also provide centralized policy management for all of the company's Internet breakouts. At the same time, Schneider has been able to improve its customer service, because the cloud acts as a buffer, preventing the loss of email. The retailer's IT team can now concentrate on its core tasks again.

Microsoft simplifies Windows 8 EULA, rewrites terms 20/08/2012

Microsoft's Windows EULA (end-user license agreement) has traditionally consisted of posterior-covering blobs of legalese. According to ZDNet though, with Windows 8, Microsoft has completely rewritten the agreement in "plain English". Also, for the first time, the EULA allows for legally installing cheaper OEM versions by end-users rather than forcing customers to purchase the fully packaged retail product.

Microsoft has split the EULA into two parts: an introductory FAQ and a second half which covers terms in greater detail, such as the right to create backups of your Windows discs.

The "System Builder" license, which is now known as a "Personal Use" license, affords end-users the ability to buy and install the software themselves. This is quite a departure from the current System Builder license, an agreement which expressly prohibits this behavior.
